For mutuals, credit unions and community banks

Every main-bank strategy starts with your data. Most never get past it.

The lifecycle playbook is well understood: segment, find the trigger moments, make the right offer through the right channel. What stops most institutions is getting usable customer data out of the core. Moroku extracts it from your Core Banking system, stands up your data warehouse, and turns it into the analytics the playbook runs on.

What main bank means

You are the main bank when you hold three things.

Customers rarely announce which institution is their main bank. Their behaviour does. Banks look for three signals, and an institution that holds all three holds the relationship.

01

Their income lands with you

Wages and salary are credited to an account you hold. Where the money arrives is where the financial life is organised.

02

Your card is the everyday card

Groceries, fuel and coffee go on a card you issued. Everyday spend is the most frequent contact you will ever have with a customer.

03

Your app is opened regularly

Customers check balances, move money and pay bills in your app as a habit, not an occasion. Regular use is the signal that attention lives with you.

Why it matters

Value compounds as the relationship deepens.

A customer opens their first banking product around age 11 and their first transaction account at 15. From there, each milestone adds to what the relationship is worth. The institution that is the main bank when the first credit card and the first mortgage arrive is the one positioned to capture the decades that follow.

Customers generate peak value around age 40.

65%

Incumbent main banks capture up to 65% of a customer's net value until age 50.1 Second place is a distant second.

2.9 of 4.4

Customers aged 35–44 hold 4.4 banking products on average, 2.9 of them with their main bank.1 Products follow the primary relationship.

The playbook

Manage the lifecycle. Influence the behaviours that create value.

Becoming the main bank is not a campaign. It is active lifecycle management: reaching the right customer at the moment they are making a decision, with a reason to bring their income, their card or their attention to you. The industry playbook for mutuals and banks focuses on three opportunities: manage the lifecycle, influence value-driving behaviours, and concentrate on priority growth segments, with Gen Z and migrants named as the two that matter most.1

The method runs in five steps.

  1. STEP 1

    Segment

Group customers by life stage, product holding and how close they already are to the three main-bank signals.

  2. STEP 2

    Find the trigger moments

A first pay cheque, a move, a first card, a home loan enquiry, an arrival in a new country. Moments when the relationship is up for grabs.

  3. STEP 3

    Make the proposition

A reward, an offer or simply useful guidance, matched to the moment and the segment.

  4. STEP 4

    Choose the channel

Branch, email, app or SMS: wherever that customer is most likely to act.

  5. STEP 5

    Measure the outcome

More usage, more products, better retention, and movement on the three signals.

A worked example: new arrivals

Migrants choose a bank during one of the biggest transitions of their lives, and that first choice is often the one that sticks.1 The institution that meets their new-to-country needs, makes account opening simple, guides them through settlement and handles international money movement is the one that becomes the main bank.

The catch

Every step of the playbook assumes you can see your customers. Most cores make that hard.

You cannot segment customers you cannot query. You cannot spot a trigger moment in data that arrives as a monthly extract, if it arrives at all. The salary credits, card transactions and app sessions that define the main bank all sit inside the core banking system, in a shape built for running accounts rather than understanding people.

That is why lifecycle programs stall at the first step. The templates are ready. The data is not.

How Moroku helps

From core to warehouse to the first trigger campaign.

Moroku works with institutions on their existing Core Banking system. We get the data out, put it somewhere useful, and turn it into the segments and signals your marketing team needs.

Extract

We connect to your Core Banking system and extract customer, account, transaction and channel data on a regular schedule, without a core replacement project.

Warehouse

We stand up your data warehouse and model the data around customers rather than accounts, so salary credits, card spend and app use can be read as one picture of each relationship.

Analyse and act

We deliver the analytics: customer segments, main-bank status against the three signals, and trigger moments as they happen, ready to drive offers through branch, email, app and SMS.

And when you are ready to go further, the same data feeds Moroku Odyssey, our behavioural engagement engine, which coaches customers toward the habits that make you their main bank.

Start with the data you already have.

In one session we will look at your core, what can be extracted, and how quickly you could be running your first segmentation and trigger campaign.
